Building Character
Located in the charming Borough of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, this multifamily project fronts onto State Street, three blocks from the historic retail district. Occupying an entire city block, over 400-feet in length, the project massing has been broken into two building volumes with an intermediate, connecting volume in between. The façade design is contextual in its approach, building upon the character of the town, while at the same time creating modern, welcoming residences.
The two main buildings are clad in a rich, brown brick punctuated alternating configurations of balconies—recessed within the brickwork or spanning sections of building setbacks. The connecting volume is clad in a ‘white-washed’ painted brick and configured as an ‘L’ in plan, affording an elegant entry courtyard with a view through a bridge-like volume onto the resident courtyard beyond. The sensitivity of the design to the surroundings won quick approval from the Borough of the bridge joining the two buildings along with concessions on some site restrictions that were previously unheard of locally.
