This past November MV+A once again participated in the Washington Architectural Foundation’s CANstruction 2017 event held at the National Building Museum. This was the 5th year in a row that MV+A’s staff has donated its time and energy to help out the Capital Area Food Bank in their largest event of the year. Several of this year’s team members have helped in previous years’ efforts that saw MV+A take awards such as “Beat Meal”, “Best DC Theme,” and in 2013, “Juror’s Favorite” with our inaugural entry. Once this year’s theme of “Connect with Nature” was announced, we started brainstorming in the office and the designs were quickly narrowed down by vote. The concept of ‘Polly Wanna CAN’ was picked as the winner and we turned over the design to our Summer Intern Griff, who was quickly learning to model in Sketchup. The design team soon was preparing construction drawings in AutoCAD so that we could place our order for the 1,448 total cans necessary to complete our pair of parrots and their perch. In addition to the cans, key elements of the parrots were their feathered wings and tails made out of craft paper and Kool-Aid packets. Although we didn’t receive any juror’s awards this year, everyone had a great time and felt justifiably proud as our Parrots rose from the jungle floor.
