Riverdale Park Townhomes

DESIGN BRIEF    |    July 2018

RIVERDALE, MARYLAND

Riverdale Park Station | Riverdale, MD
These new urban-style townhomes near the University of Maryland offer everyday conveniences at Riverdale Park Station.

The townhomes at Riverdale Park Station, developed by Stanley Martin Homes, add another exciting element and building type to the live, work, and play neighborhood. MV+A was selected to be the design architect for the building facades and massing to bring a distinctively urban feel to the townhouses for a smooth transition from the commercial core of the development to the residential streets that complete the master plan. MV+A’s rapport with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Town of Riverdale Park was also a deciding factor. At full build-out there will be 119 urban-style townhouses ranging from 1,850 – 2,750 square feet each, adding to the sense of community being fostered in the growing neighborhood. Responding to the eclectic architecture seen throughout Riverdale Park Station, MV+A designed the facades based on the client’s typical floor plans and worked with the County and Town to gain approval. The formality of the architecture and its relation to other buildings help create the urban fabric that MV+A’s designers wanted to achieve.

Though not far from retail and public transit, the townhouses are surrounded by green space, close to parks and trails.

What sets these homes apart is that there is nothing like them available in the area – they are new, affordable, and close to mass transit. A short ten-minute walk to the metro and MARC rail systems and a private shuttle system to and from the University of Maryland College Park campus truly make this a transit-oriented development. A new vehicular and pedestrian bridge over the CSX railroad tracks, improved trails, and new bike lanes and bike share programs add to the travel convenience. MV+A’s original involvement designing the 38-acre site master plan has grown to include designing two more apartment buildings on site with over 600 units.. The Stanley Martin townhouses and Riverdale Park Station is a great accomplishment for MV+A and everyone who has worked on it over the past twelve years.

The facades of each townhouse, while unique, work together to form a cohesive design, drawing its inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood.
