77 H Street

The world’s first mixed-use project to incorporate an urban Wal-Mart with housing above, 77 H Street is located within blocks of the US Capitol, and establishes a crucial bridge between H Street NE and Chinatown. The Wal-Mart was placed on the second floor, with smaller in-line retail lining H Street and 303 residential units above. The project successfully offers a new housing product and brings an affordable, urban grocery to Capitol Hill, while enlivening a neglected part of the neighborhood. Contemporary details converse with the traditional, creating a modern aesthetic that seamlessly blends with the adjacent (circa 1903) Government Printing Office for an acclaimed project with an immediate positive community impact.
